Allendale, a neighborhood in Shreveport, LA, is known for its historic shotgun houses. These houses, along with bungalows, represent the area's history, dating back to the late 1800s. Allendale has experienced periods of both decline and revitalization, with efforts to improve the neighborhood through community gardens and new housing.

This one is reminiscent of my hometown of Belcher, Louisiana. After talking to my mentor, collector, and friend Henry Price, I tried something a little different application with this one. Fun, but challenging as I try other techniques - always wanting to grow artistically.

Shotgun houses are part of the culture of North Louisiana. Being raised in this area on a cotton plantation has given me a perspective not known by many. My goal is not let these stories fade away without artistic interpretation.

People put bottle trees in front of their houses, particularly in the American South, as a form of folk magic and decoration, rooted in the belief that the bottles can trap evil spirits, especially at night. Nothing like an old shotgun house with a Cadillac out back is there.

These scenes are common in small rural areas. The structures are what peeks my interest…never to let them fade away forever. I want to make sure that we never forget how they’ve stored many memories of family, faith, food, and the future.
